Manual transmission

If you are learning to drive then learning manual can be an exciting option. First of all, when you pass your restricted test you will be able to drive either automatic or manual transmission vehicles. Learning manual can be more satisfying as you get to use the gears and your other foot (the left one) which you may have forgotten all about when you were driving automatic. You will need this foot to operate the clutch.

Things to avoid when driving a manual!

Coasting:

This means that the clutch is depressed for too long whilst the vehicle is moving or the vehicle is travelling whilst in neutral. This usually  occurs when approaching an intersection and you don't have time to fully engage the clutch between gear changes.

Danger: All engine braking is lost and you could lose control of the vehicle.

Remedy: Either give yourself more time to change down the gears or be more selective. This means that block gear changes can be used eg fourth to second or third to first etc. Sometimes missing out a gear is preferable to coasting.

Looking down at gear lever:

This is a really bad habit to get into. This usually happens when the person driving is not feeling confident with the gears. Looking down might  give reassurance but doesn't make it easier to change. In fact it makes it harder because your more likely to lose control of the car.

Danger: You are looking down and so taking your eyes off the road. It only takes a split second for something to happen such as a child running into the road.

Remedy: Get a feel for the gears first by placing your hands correctly on the gear lever before changing gear. Practise moving the gear lever through all the positions until you feel confident. You can do this whilst you are stationary.
