More things to avoid when driving manual

Here are more things to avoid when driving manual!

Stalling the engine:

Stalling means the engine has cut out. This is probably the most common mistake amongst learner drivers. You need to learn to coordinate the use of the accelerator and clutch. Generally a stall happens for one of two reasons.

1. Not enough accelerator or gas before moving off. This is usually when moving off on a hill start but can happen on the level.

2. Clutch is released too quickly when moving off which can result either in a stall or the dreaded 'bunny hop'

Danger: Can be a danger at an intersection or traffic lights if a vehicle is too close behind. They may have to brake hard to avoid ploughing into you.

Remedies: Make sure you have enough gas before moving off and release the clutch slowly and smoothly. It's a seesaw movement!!

Rolling back on hill starts:

This happens when the clutch isn't at biting point (the point where you feel the engine bite or tug a little and the engine tone changes)

Danger: You could roll back into a car or a pedestrian behind.

Remedy: Practice finding the biting point in quiet areas. Make sure you can feel the biting point by feeling and listening to the change in engine tone. Also make sure you have enough gas or you will stall.
