The Clutch

What is the clutch?

The clutch is a device which connects or disconnects the power from the engine to the gearbox. It consists of 2 circular plates-one attached to the engine and the other to the gearbox, which rotate when the engine is running and a gear is selected. When the clutch pedal is pressed down the 2 plates are forced apart disengaging the power. When the clutch pedal is released fully then the power is engaged. When the clutch pedal is released about half way the 2 plates start to touch. We call this partial power or the biting point.

Using the clutch

To allow smooth transmission of power from the engine to the gearbox the clutch pedal should be released slowly and smoothly. Releasing the clutch too quickly can result in the dreaded bunny-hop.

Riding the clutch

Riding the clutch means resting your foot on the clutch pedal which can result in some wear and tear being applied to the clutch plate linings. This wears the clutch out a lot quicker so should be avoided. Move your foot away from the clutch pedal when not in use. Riding the clutch should not be confused with coasting.
